You can put this solution on YOUR website! let c = C's present age
let e = E's age
:
Write an equation for each statement
:
The sum of Carl's age and Ellen's age is 40 years.
c + e = 40
Carl's age 10 years from now will be 1 year less than 4 times Ellen's age 6 years ago.
c + 10 = 4(e-6) - 1
c + 10 = 4e - 24 - 1
c = 4e - 25 - 10
c = 4e - 35
Back to the 1st equation, replace c with (4d-35)
(4e-35) + e = 40
4e + e = 40 + 35
5e = 75
e = 75/5
e = 15 yrs is E's present age
I'll let you find C's age, check your solutions in the 2nd statement
Find their present ages.
