Question 978573: There are pictures that went with the question and I tried to copy them over but they wouldn't copy so I'll describe them. The question involves triangles and how many small triangles are in each triangle. The first picture is listed as fig. 1 and has one larger triangle and 3 small triangles inside (total=3 smaller triangles), Fig. 2 has 4 larger triangles with 3 small triangles in each larger triangle (total=12 smaller triangles) and fig. 3 has 9 larger triangles with 3 smaller triangles in each larger triangle (total=27 smaller triangles). The questions I have to answer are a)what are the missing values (fig. 4 & 5), b)represent the relationship with words and c)represent the relationship with an equation. The table looks like this:
x = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
y = 3,12,27, -, - (I came up with fig. 4=36 and fig, 5=45)
I came up with an equation of y = 3(x)x and it checks out for all the figures showing (fig, 1, 2 & 3) but I don't think it's right because the changes in smaller triangles between fig. 1&2, 3&4 and 4&5 are the same (9) but the change between 2&3 is different (15) and that's the only one that's different. I've been at this problem for over 1 1/2 hours. Help, please!
