ALL THE WORK BELOW IS WRONG. I MISREAD THE EQUATION AND SOLVED THE WRONG EQUATION:

In proper notation, the equation is 4.2abs%280.5-x%29%2B1=3.1.

Isolate the absolute value;
Apply the possible conditions;
Solve for each condition.

abs%280.5-x%29=%283.1-1%29%2F4.2
abs%280.5-x%29=0.5

CONDITION, 0.5-x is positive or zero.
0.5-x=0.5
x=0

CONDITION, 0.5-x is negative.
-%280.5-x%29=0.5
-0.5%2Bx=0.5
x=0.5%2B0.5
x=1

SOLUTION: x=0 or x=1.

As said at top, all the work toward a solution is wrong because I misread the rightside member of the equation.

I need to find x from this absolute value formula:
4.2[.5-x]+1=-3.1
If 4.2abs%28.5+-+x%29+%2B+1+=+-+3.1, then there are NO SOLUTIONS.
