Question 978319: Jess sold 70 items in 2 sizes.
The large size sells for $12 each and the small size sells for $8 each.
The $ received from the sales of the large items = the $ received from the sales of the small items.
How many large items were sold?
I can get the answer = 28, but I can't set it up algebraically.
Here are my steps:
Step 1: Quantity: l + s = 70
Step 2: Dollars: 1($12)l = 1.5($8)s
Where do I go next with these equations?
Thanks for any help.
Helen

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Jess sold 70 items in 2 sizes.
The large size sells for $12 each and the small size sells for $8 each.
The $ received from the sales of the large items = the $ received from the sales of the small items.
How many large items were sold?
I can get the answer = 28, but I can't set it up algebraically.
----
L + S = 70
12L = 8S
----------
Substitute for "S" and solve for "L"::
12L = 8(70-L)
20L = 8*70
L = (7/2)8
L = 28 (# of Large items sold)
-------------
