Question 977725: A man standing at point A walks 1 mile south, 3 miles east, 5 miles north, and 7 miles west to reach point B. The length of line segment AB is?
Please explain with detail and with a diagram. I have tried several times but I still have not been able to solve this problem. Answer by josgarithmetic(39630) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! You can think of the movements as cartesian coordinate components.
North is up
South is down
East is rightward
West is leftward
x directions, +3-7=-4
y direction, -1+5=+4
Net movements was four units left, four units up. That is how to relatively locate point B from A. x and y form legs of a right triangle, and AB is the hypotenuse.
