You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Gradient of a straight line is the same as "slope".

y2 - y1
------- = slope
x2 - x1

Coordinates of two points are (x1,y1) and (x2,y2)

(8,y1) and (-1,3) {given points}

3 - y1
------ = 2 {slope of the line passing through the two points is 2
-1 - 8

3 - y1
------ = 2 {subtracted on bottom}
-9

3 - y1 = -18 {multiplied each side by -9}

-y1 = -21 {subtracted 3 from each side}

y1 = 21 {divided each side by -1}
