You can put this solution on YOUR website!
How many gallons of a 85% solution must be mixed with 96 gallons of 40% solution to obtain a 53% solution?
:
Let x = amt of 85% solution required
:
This will be mixed with 96 gal, therefore:
Resulting amt = (x+96)
:
The decimal equation:
.85x + .40(96) = .53(x+96)
:
.85x + 38.4 = .53x + 50.88
:
.85x - .53x = 50.88 - 38.4
:
.32x = 12.48
:
x = 12.48/.32
:
x = 39 gal of 85% solution
:
:
Check solution:
.85(39) + .40(96) = .53(39+96)
33.15 + 38.4 = .53(135)
71.55 = 71.55; confirms our solution

Not that hard, right?
