Question 97318: Madison left Seattle at 4:48 p.m. and traveled at a rate of 36 kph less than 4 times the speed of Luis, who left at the same time but in the opposite direction. By the time it was 6:07 p. m., they were 164 kilometers apart. What were their speeds?
Please help it is driving me crazy!

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let x=(Luis' speed) so (4x-36)=(Madison's speed) ... the time is 1 hr 19 min, this is 79/60 hr

their rate of separation is the sum of their speeds

x+4x-36=164/(79/60) ... 5x-36=(164*60)/79 ... 395x-(79*36)=164*60 ... 395x=12684 ... x=32.1 approx.
