Question 970914: Carlos and Maria went on vacation. When carlos drove, he drove at 50 miles/hr. When Maria drove, she traveled at 65 miles/hr. They drove for 6 hours, and went a total of 360 miles. What was their average speed? Answer by Boreal(15235) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! C goes 50 mph
M goes at 65 mph
hours for C is x
hours for M is 6-x
50x+65 (6-x)=360 mph *hours=miles
50x+390-65x=360
-15x= -30
x=2
Carlos drove 2 hours and 100 miles
Maria drove 4 hours and 260 miles
You could do this with x and y
x+y=6
50x +65y=360
I like using only one variable.
