Question 970229: 3/4+1/3
Answer by Boreal(15235) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Common denominator is 4*3 or 12. You can always get a common denominator by multiplying all the denominators.
(3/4) + (1/3)= (9/12) + (4/12)
you multiply top and bottom by the same number. The bottom number will determine the top. You will have to make 4 become 12, and you multiply by 3. You do the same thing to the top. You are multiplying by 3/3 which is 1 and doesn't change it.
The second term, 1/3, is multiplied top and bottom by 4.
Now you can add the two, because the denominators are the same.
13/12 is the answer, or 1 1/12.
