Question 969862: A rowing team rowed 60 miles while going with the current in the same amount of time as it took to row 30 miles going against the current. The rate of the current was 3 miles per hour. Find the rate of the rowing team in still water. Found 2 solutions by josgarithmetic, Boreal:Answer by josgarithmetic(39613) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! ____________________rate___________time______________distance
WITH________________r+3____________t__________________60
AGNST_______________r-3____________t__________________30
You can put this solution on YOUR website! speed of boat in still water = x
speed of current =3
(x+3) mph * t=60 miles t= (60)/(x+3)
(x-3) mph * t = 30 miles t=(30)/((x-3)
times are same. Therefore,
(60)/(x+3) = (30)/(x-3)
60 x -180 =30 x + 90 by cross-multiplication
30 x=270 by subtracting 30 x from both sides and adding 180 to both sides.
x =9 mph.
Check
Downstream at 12 mph, 5 hours to go 60 miles.
Upstream at 6 mph, 5 hours to go 30 miles.
