The first pipe fills  1%2F8  of the tank volume in  1 minute.

The second pipe fills  1%2F12  of the tank volume in the same time.

Working together,  the two pipes fill  1%2F8 + 1%2F12 = 3%2F24 + 2%2F24 = 5%2F24  of the tank volume in  1 minute.

Hence,  it will take  24%2F5 minutes for both pipes to fill the tank.
It is equal to  44%2F5  minute =  4  minutes and  48  seconds.
