Question 96674: Could you please help me with this question?
A stained glass window is being designed in the shape of a rectangle surmounted by a semicircle. The width of the window is to be 3 ft. but the height is yet to be determined. If 24 ft^2 of glass is to be used, find the height.
I know that you have to figure out the sides or something like that, but to be honest I really have no idea where to start at this problem. THanks!!

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let h=(height of the window) ... the radius of the semicircle is 3/2 ... the length of the rectangle is h-(3/2)

(rectangle area)+(semicircle area)=24 ... 3(h-(3/2))+(pi(3/2)^2)/2=24 ... h=((24-((pi(3/2)^2)/2))/3)+(3/2)

using a calculator gives h=8.32 (approximately)
