You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Elizabeth and Angela skate for their college speed skating team. In the last race, Elizabeth skated the 500-meter race in 59 seconds. The average for this race is 65 seconds with a standard deviation of 4.0 seconds.
z(59) = (59-65)/4 = 4/4 = 1
That means her time (59 sec) is 1 standard deviation above the mean.
-----
Angela skated the 1000 meter race in 135 seconds. The average for this race is 140 seconds with a standard deviation of 10.0 seconds.
z(135) = (135-140)/10 = -5/10 = -1/2
That means her time is 1/2 standard deviation below the mean
------------------------------
Find the z-score for each skater. Relatively speaking, which skater had the faster time?
Ans: Elizabeth had the faster average since her time is a standard
deviation above the mean.
