You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Ken has n-3= d. And:
.05n+.10d= 22.35 Since the problem says d= n+3, let's substitute:
.05n+.10(n-3)= 22.35 Multiply to get rid of the parenthesis:
.05n+.10n-.30= 22.35 Add.30n to both sides and add n on left
.15n= 22.65 Divide both sides by .15
n= 147 He has 151 nickles and 151-3= 148 dimes.
Let's see if this is true:
151*.05= 7.55
148*.10=14.80
Total---22.35 We have the correct answer.

Ken has 3 more nickels than dimes. How many nickels and how many dimes does Ken have, if the total value of the coins is $22.35?
-------------------
Set the "3 more nickels" aside.
Then there are pairs of nickels and dimes worth $22.20
Each pair is 15 cents
2220/15 = 148 pairs
--> 148 dimes & 151 nickels
