Question 96364: Suppose you have two 20 oz cups full of gems. You also have an empty 8 oz cup and an empty 14 oz cup. Using only these four cups, you need to measure exactly 6 oz of gems in each of the smaller cups. Without spilling a gem, how can this be done?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
using one 20 oz cup, fill the 14 oz cup and pour the remaining gems (6 oz) into the 8 oz cup

using the other 20 oz cup, fill the 8 oz cup (using 2 oz) ... this leaves 18 oz in the second 20 oz cup

empty the 8 oz cup into the first 20 oz cup

fill the 8 oz cup from the 14 oz cup, leaving 6 oz in the 14 oz cup

fill the second 20 oz cup from the 8 oz cup, using 2 oz and leaving 6 oz in the 8 oz cup
