Question 961751: I am not good at word problems so can you help me with this?
Jessica has some nickles and quarters in her bank totaling $6.95. If she has seven more nickles than quarters,how many of each coin does she have?
I think the equation would look like this:
.05n+.25q(-7)=$6.95
but how would I isolate a variable?
I could really use your help on this one.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You have 2 unknowns and 2 equations
so it is solvable
Let +n+ = the number of nickels
Let +q+ = the number of quarters
---------------------------------
(1) +n+=+q+%2B+7+
(2) +5n+%2B+25q+=+695+ ( in cents )
---------------------------------
(1) +n+-+q+=+7+
Multiply both sides of (1) by +5+
and subtract (1) from (2)
(2) +5n+%2B+25q+=+695+
(1) +-5n+%2B+5q+=+-35+
------------------------
+30q+=+660+
+q+=+22+
and
(1) +n+=+22+%2B+7+
(1) +n+=+29+
She has 29 nickels and 22 quarters
check:
(2) +5n+%2B+25q+=+695+
(2) +5%2A29+%2B+25%2A22+=+695+
(2) +145+%2B+550+=+695+
(2) +695+=+695+
OK

I think the equation would look like this:
==================
Start with 2 equations from what you know.
n = # of nickels, q = quarters
---
5n + 25q = 695
n = q + 7
---
Sub for n in the 1st eqn
5(q+7) + 25q = 695
30q + 35 = 695
30q = 660
q = 22
n = 29
