to eliminate a variable, you need to get the absolute values of two terms in two different equations to equal each other

multiplying the first equation by 3 gives (3/2)x-(1/2)y=9

adding this to the second equation eliminates the y term and gives (19/10)x=11 ... x=110/19

(2/5)(110/19)+(1/2)y=2 ... (1/2)y=-6/19 ... y=-12/19
