I am walking a constant speed of 4 mph. A car moving at a constant speed passes me. From the moment it passes me to its disappearance around the corner, I take 18 steps. Walking on, I reach the corner in 126 more steps. What was the speed of the car in mph?
(I tried a proportion- but with no luck).

You can put this solution on YOUR website! Assume that the steps you take can be used to measure time.
They can be because you're taking the same step size at a constant speed.
It took the car 18 steps to reach the corner from the time the car passed you.
It took you 18+126 steps to reach the corner from the time the car passed you.
You're walking at 4 mph.
Rate x Time = Distance
You can put this solution on YOUR website! In the time it took you to walk 18 steps, the car traveled (18+126)=144 steps. so the car is traveling 144/18 times as fast as you.
As a ratio: (x=speed of the car)
144 steps/18 steps=x/4mph Multiply both sides by 4mph (steps cancels out)
(576/18)mph=x
32mph=x ANSWER: The car is traveling 32 mph
