You can put this solution on YOUR website!
r=rate of the slower train
440miles/4hrs=110mph The combined speed of the trains is 110 mph.
r+r+5mph=110 mph
2r=105mph
r=52.5 mph ANSWER 1: The slower train was traveling 52.5 mph
r+5=57.5 ANSWER 2 The faster train was traveling 57.5 mph
CHECK
4hr(52.5mph)+4hr(57.5mph=440 miles
210 miles+230 miles=440 miles
440 miles=440 miles

Two high speed trains are 440 miles apart and traveling toward each other. they meet in 4 hours. if one trains speed is 5 miles per hour faster than the other, find the speed of each train.
***
let x=speed of slower train
x+5=speed of faster train
speed at which trains are traveling toward each other=sum of their speeds=x+x+5=2x+5
travel time*speed=distance
4(2x+5)=440
8x+20=440
8x=420
x=52.5
x+5=57.5
speed of slower train=52.5 mph
speed of faster train=57.5 mph
