Question 954481: On 1cm grid paper I need to draw an enclosure with an area of 94 sq. cm and a perimeter of 60 centimeters. I know how to calculate area and perimeter separately. I do not understand how to create an enclosure that meets the above measurements. Is there a formula to follow or chart to fill in that will help me in the future. Thank you for your help. Sharon

Follow the formulas you know for Area and Perimeter, use two variables for the dimensions, and solve for the dimensions. You should not expect anything tricky here.

x and y, the dimensions.

Solve the system; see what you get. You will deal with a quadratic equation.

Your steps should show , and you will need general solution method for a quadratic equation.

L+W = 30

Substitute for "L" and solve for "W"::
L = 30-W

(30-W)W = 9W

-W^2 + 30W - 94 = 0
W^2 - 30W + 94 = 0
W = 26.45 ; L = 3.55

Comment:: The L and W values could be interchanged.
