You can put this solution on YOUR website!
N=nickels; D=dimes
N+D=20
D=20-N
5N+10D=120 cents Substitute for d.
5N+10(20-N)=120 cents
5N+200-10N=120 cents Subtract 200 from each side.
-5N=-80 cents Divide each side by -5
N=16 There are 16 nickels.
D=20-N=20-16=4 ANSWER: There are 4 dimes.
CHECK:
5N+10D=120 cents
5(16)+10(4)=120 cents
80 cents+ 40 cents = 120 cents
120 cents=120 cents
