Question 953276: I have only figured out the first equation of this problem I am having trouble setting up the second equation, could someone help me? I'm preparing for a test and I'm having trouble:
Five hot dogs and three hamburgers cost a total of $6.20. Two hot dogs cost .50 cents more than a hamburger. How much does each hot dog and each hamburger cost?
First equation I found: 5x+3y=6.20
You can put this solution on YOUR website! I have only figured out the first equation of this problem I am having trouble setting up the second equation, could someone help me? I'm preparing for a test and I'm having trouble:
Five hot dogs and three hamburgers cost a total of $6.20. Two hot dogs cost .50 cents more than a hamburger. How much does each hot dog and each hamburger cost?
First equation I found: 5x+3y=6.20
***
let d=cost of each hot dog
let h=cost of each hamburger
..
5d+3h=6.20
2d=h+.50
h=2d-.50
5d+3(2d-.50)=6.20
5d+6d-1.50=6.20
11d=6.20+1.50
11d=7.70
d=.70
h=2d-.50=1.40-.50=.90
cost of each hot dog=$.70
cost of each hamburger=$.90
You can put this solution on YOUR website! x=hot dog; y=hamburger
2x=y+$0.50
2x-$0.50=y
The equation above is what you were missing: you should try to finish on your own and use solution below to check.
5x+3y=$6.20 Substitute for y
5x+3(2x-$0.50)=$6.20
5x+6x-$1.50=$6.20 Add $1.50 to each side.
11x=$7.70 Divide each side by 11
x=$0.70 ANSWER 1: Hot dogs cost $0.70.
y=2x-$0.50=2($0.70)-$0.50=$1.40-$0.50=$0.90 ANSWER 2: Hamburgers cost $0.90.
CHECK:
5x+3y=$6.20
5($0.70)+3($0.90)=$6.20
$3.50+$2.70=$6.20
$6.20=$6.20
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Let's call the hot dogs d and the hamburgers h. And you say that:
5d + 3h = 6.2 And:
h = 2d + .50; h = 2d + .50
Substitute in the first equation:
5d + 3(2d + .5) = 6.2
5d + 6d + 1.5 = 6.2 subtract 1.5 from both sides and add the d's on left
11d = 4.7
d = 4.7/11 = 0.43 per hot dog. And the hamburgers:
h= 2(0.43)+ .50 = 1.36
Proof:
5(.43)+ 3(1.36) = 2.15 + 4.08 = 6.23 We've got the correct answer. I got 6.23 instead of 6.20 I think because of rounding of decimals.
