Nine more than four times a number ... 4n+9

is the same as ... =

one less than twice the number ... 2n-1

4n+9=2n-1 ... subtracting 2n gives 2n+9=-1 ... subtracting 9 gives 2n=-10 ... dividing by 2 gives n=-5
