You can put this solution on YOUR website!
r=plane's rate
900 mi/r=250 mi/r-130mph Multiply each side by (r)(r-130 mph)
900 mi(r-130mph)=250 mi(r) Divide each side by 250mi
3.6(r-130mph)=r
3.6r-468mph=r Subtract r from each side.
2.6r-468mph=0 Add 468mph to each side.
2.6r=468mph Divide each side by 2.6.
r=180 mph ANSWER The speed of the plane is 180 mph.
CHECK:
Car's speed=r-130mph=180mph-130mph=50mph
900mi/180 mph=250mi/50mph
5 hours=5 hours

***
let x=speed of the plane
x-130=speed of the car
travel time=distance/speed
..
900%2Fx=250%2F%28x-130%29
900(x-130)=250x
900x-117000=250x
650x=117000
x=195
speed of the plane=195 mph

A plane can fly 900 miles in the same time as it takes a car to go 250 miles. If the car travels 130 mph slower than the plane, find the speed of the plane.
Let speed of plane be S
Then speed of car = S - 130
Time plane takes to travel 900 miles: 900%2FS
Time car takes to travel 250 miles: 250%2F%28S+-+130%29
Since times are equal, we get: 900%2FS+=+250%2F%28S+-+130%29
900(S - 130) = 250(S) -------- Cross-multiplying
900S - 117,000 = 250S
900S – 250S = 117,000
650S = 117,000
S, or speed of plane = 117000%2F650, or highlight_green%28180%29 mph
