You can put this solution on YOUR website!
About how many times more intense is an earthquake that measures 8.4 on the Richter scale than an earthquake that measures 7.8 on the Richter scale?
Recall that Richter defined the magnitude R of an earthquake of intensity I to be
R = log I.
log I = 8.4 - 7.8
log I = .6
Antilog of .6 = 3.98 times more intense
-------------------------------------------------------
I think I did this wrong
Antilog(8.4%2F7.8) = 11.94 time more intense!
