You can put this solution on YOUR website!
d=dimes; n=nickels
n+d=110
d=110-n
$0.05n+$0.10d=$8.60 Substitute for d.
$0.05n+$0.10(110-n)=$8.60
$0.05n+$11.00-$0.10n=$8.60 Subtract $11.00 from each side.
-$0.05n=-$2.40 Divide each side by -$0.05
n=48 There were 48 nickels
d=110-n=110-48=62 ANSWER: There were 62 dimes.
CHECK:
$0.05n+$0.10d=$8.60
$0.05(48)+$0.10(62)=$8.60
$2.40+$6.20=$8.60
$8.60=$8.60
