Question 951197: Please help me make and equation for this problem: An eastbound train leaves Chicago and averages 125 km/hr heading for New York City 1300 km away. At the same time, a westbound train leaves New York City and averages 135 km/hr heading for Chicago. In how many hours will the trains pass each other?
So far I have made a box with:
Rate x Time = Distance
Eastbound 125 (rate)t {time (variable)} 125t (distance)
Westbound 135 (rate) (missing time) (missing Distance which is the time times the rate)
I am missing the time and Distance for the Westbound train

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

distance=rate*time
eastbound train:

rate=125%28km%2Fh%29
time t
d=125%2At
westbound train:

rate=135%28km%2Fh%29

time t
d=135%2At
since d=1300, we have
125%28km%2Fh%29%2At%2B135%28km%2Fh%29%2At=1300km....cancel km
125%281%2Fh%29%2At%2B135%281%2Fh%29%2At=1300
260%2At=1300h
t=1300h%2F260
t=5h
the trains will pass each other in 5h
