Question 951196: I'm studying for an assessment test and this is not a good start. I'm now feeling anxiety that I will fail both answering and completing the test on-time; I don't normally do well on timed tests. Up to this moment I thought I had a successful career now I'm thinking the results will measure my ability to manage; all this after a 30 year career. I tend to over think questions and situations. The test that I need to take is for Numeric Reasoning. It's a timed test; 20 minutes for 18 questions. I appreciate any tips.
I'm having trouble understanding how the answer was derived for the following question.
If Andrew's department receives 6 new computers, they will have 1/2 as many as if they had received 24 new computers.
Q: How many computers does Andrew's department have prior to receiving any new one's?
Thanks, BVF
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Let x be the number of computers that the office had prior to receiving any new ones.
x+6=(x+24)/2
2x+12=x+24
x=12

Thanks Ed I appreciate your response.
That's how I set up the equation with the exception of adding x to the right side. My set up included the following:
x+6=1/2*24
Q: why is x added to the right side?
.
Because the problem states that you must add 24 to the original number of computers and the original number is x
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
If Andrew's department receives new computers, they will have as many as if they had received new computers.
Q: How many computers does Andrew's department have prior to receiving any new one's?
prior to receiving any new one's there was computers
if department receives new computers that will be
if they had received , that will be
and will be of
so, we can write an equation as following:
now solve for
prior to receiving Andrew's department have computers
check:
have , receive => total:
have , receive => total:
as you can see
