You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A cyclist rides into the country at an average speed of 10 miles per hour.
When his bicycle gets a flat tire, he walks it back at an average speed of 3 miles per hour.
If he returns home 6 and a half hours after he starts, how far into the country does he go?
:
let d = distance he travel into the country. (also the distance traveled back)
:
Write a time equation; time = dist/speed
:
bike time + walk time = 6.5 hrs
d%2F10 + d%2F3 = 6.5
multiply by 30
30*d%2F10 + 30*d%2F3 = 30*6.5
Cancel the denominators and we have
3d + 10d = 195
13d = 195
d = 195/13
d = 15 miles into the country
:
:
Check this, find the actual time each way
15/10 = 1.5 hrs
15/3 = 5.0 hrs
-----------------
tot time: 6.5 hrs, confirms out solution
