Question 949260: A passenger train leaves a train depot three hours after a freight train leaves the same depot. The freight train is traveling 16 mph slower than the passenger train. Find the rate of the passenger train if the passenger train overtakes the freight train after 6.75 hours. Could someone provide equations so I can see what I'm missing please. Thanks for the help. You can put this solution on YOUR website! A passenger train leaves a train depot three hours after a freight train leaves the same depot.
The freight train is traveling 16 mph slower than the passenger train.
Find the rate of the passenger train if the passenger train overtakes the freight train after 6.75 hours.
:
From the information given, we know the passenger train travel time = 6.75 hrs
and the freight train 3 hrs longer, freight travel time = 9.75 hrs
:
Let s = speed of the pass train
then
(s-16) = speed of the freight
:
When the pass catches the freight they will have traveled the same distance
Write a distance equation; dist = speed * time
9.75(s-16) = 6.75s
9.75s - 156 = 6.75s
9.75s - 6.75s = 156
3s = 156
s = 156/3
s = 52 mph is the pass train
:
:
We can confirm this by finding the actual distance each traveled
6.75*52 = 351 mi
9.75*36 = 351 mi (16 mph slower)
