From the information given, we know the passenger train travel time = 6.75 hrs
and the freight train 3 hrs longer, freight travel time = 9.75 hrs

Let s = speed of the pass train
then
(s-16) = speed of the freight

When the pass catches the freight they will have traveled the same distance
Write a distance equation; dist = speed * time
9.75(s-16) = 6.75s
9.75s - 156 = 6.75s
9.75s - 6.75s = 156
3s = 156
s = 156/3
s = 52 mph is the pass train
