Question 949128:  Hello,
My math problem is: 12x + 131 = 189 + 3x
It is telling me to solve the problem and check it.
My answer is: x = 6 4/9
It is correct but when I do the checking, I can't seem to get it right? My answer for the check part:
12(6 4/9) + 131 = 189 + 3( 6 4/9)
77 22/3 + 131 = 189 + 19 1/3
But my score book says the right answer is:12(6 4/9) + 131 = 189 + 3( 6 4/9)
72 48/9 + 131 = 189 + 18 12/9
Please someone help? What am I doing wrong? Thank-you! I'm very confused.

You can  put this solution on YOUR website! 12(6 4/9)=(12*6)+12(4/9)=72+48/912x + 131 = 189 + 3x
9x=58
x=58/9
CHECK:

Your problem is here:
12(6 4/9)=(12*6)+12(4/9)=72+48/9
Your answer of 77 22/3 is off. Maybe just a multiplication error.
The 19 1/3 is the same as 18 12/9 so that part is all right.

  = 12(6) = 72, and
Therefore,   =  , or

If you'd done the correct calculations, you'd have gotten: , which is the same as , leading to:

Continue with this, and you should get a TRUE equation.

OR

For the check, you could use the IMPROPER FRACTION as opposed to the mixed number,
Therefore, you'd get:

  ------ Multiplying by LCD, 3
232 + 393 = 567 + 58 ------- Simplifying NUMERATORS since all denominators are equal
625 = 625 (TRUE)
