Question 948203: Another pilot plans to travel 300 km east, then 300 km north-east. Show that the resultant bearing is 67.5 degrees. How far east of its starting point has the plane travelled? Please Help! I am struggling! Thank You!

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let East be positive x and North be positive y.
Then starting from (0,0), pilot first goes 300km East.
(0,0)+(300,0)=(300,0)
Then 300km NE,
(300,0)+(300cos%2845%29,300sin%2845%29)=(300,0)+(212.1,212.1)=(512.1,212.1)
So the plane has traveled 512.1 miles East.
The angle that the bearing makes with the x-axis would be found using the tangent.
tan%28theta%29=212.1%2F512.1=0.4142
theta=22.5
So I'm assuming that the bearing you need is from North (positive y) which would be,
90-22.5=67.5
