Question 947008: The area of a framed picture is x^2 square inches. The molding of the frame is 1.5 inches wide all the way around. how can you find the dimensions of the picture that shows throught the frame?
i could not figure it out. i thought x^2 - 1.5. But I dont know how i would even solve that. Answer by josgarithmetic(39630) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! The dimensions of the picture seem to be for a square x on the side. The 1.5 inch molding extends on all four sides of the picture.
The one dimension: (x+2*1.5)
The orthogonal dimension: (x+2*1.5)
The problem is really that maybe your description is unclear. To be better, give the exact problem description, word-for-word, as stated in your book or document. As described in your posting, the ENTIRE picture PLUS frame seems to be .

Let me say this another way:
The dimensions of the picture were already given as x by x. The question, find the dimensions of the picture that shows through the frame, has the answer x by x. A good quality textbook or piece of designed instruction will give much better described exercises and questions. Does a picture come with the exercise?
