The avg speed of the round trip is 2*50*25/(50+25) = 2500/75 = 100/3 mi/hr

8 hrs- 2 hrs shopping=6 hrs travel
Let d= distance to the mall
d/50 mph + d/25 mph=6 hrs
d/50mph+(2/2)(d/25mph)=6 hrs
d/50mph+2d/50mph=6hrs
3d/50mph=6 hrs Multiply each side by 50 mph
3d=6hrs*50 mph
3d=300 miles Divide each side by 3
d=100 miles
ANSWER The distance to the mall is 100 miles.
trip to mall: 100 miles/50 mph=2 hrs
trip home: 100 mi/25 mph=4 hrs
