Question 941895: A youth organization collected nickels and dimes for a charity drive. By the end of the 1-day drive the youth had collected $36.05. If there were three times as many dimes as nickels, how many of each type of coin was collected? Answer by srinivas.g(540) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! no of dimes = 3 times the no of nickles
10 dimes = 1 dollar
1 dime = 0.1 dollar
20 nickels = 1 dollar
1 nickle =0.05 dollar
total = $36.05
let x be the no of nickles
then no of dimes = 3x
3x*0.1 +x*0.05 =36.05
0.3x+0.05x=36.05
x(0.3+0.05) =36.05
x(0.35)= 36.05
divide with 0.35 on both sides
x= 103
No of nickles = 103
no of dimes = 3*103
= 309
Result :no of dimes =309
no of nickles = 103
