      (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! x = daughter now 9x = mother now {at present, the mother is 9 times the daughter}

 x + 4 = daughter in 4 years  {added 4 onto current age}
 9x + 4 = mother in 4 years {added 4 onto current age}

 9x + 4 = 5(x + 4) {in 4 years a mother will be 5 times the daughter}
 9x + 4 = 5x + 20 {used distributive property}
 4x = 16 {subtracted 5x and subtracted 4 from each side}
 x = 4 {divided each side by 4}
 9x = 36 {substituted 4, in for x, into 9x}

 daughter is 4 and mother is 36
