Question 93861: Good Evening,
I have a word problem that I am not sure I solved correctly could you please tell me if this is correct?
The sum of two numbers is 43. The second is 1 more than 2 times the first. What are the two numbers?
I got 2x + y + 1 = 43 as the equation and x = 22 and y = 21. Is this correct or did I mess this up? Thanks for your help in advance.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The sum of two numbers is 43. The second is 1 more than 2 times the first. What are the two numbers?
------------------
x+y=43
y = 2x+1
------------
Substitute the 2nd into the 1st to get:
x + 2x+1 = 43
3x = 42
x = 14
-------------
Substitute that into y=2x+1 to solve for y:
y = 2*14+1
y = 29
==============
The numbers are 14 and 29

Question:
The sum of two numbers is 43. The second is 1 more than 2 times the first. What are the two numbers?
I got 2x + y + 1 = 43 as the equation and x = 22 and y = 21. Is this correct or did I mess this up? Thanks for your help in advance.
Answer:
Suppose the first number = x

Two times the first number = 2x

Second number is 1 more than two times the first....

so, second number(y) = 2x + 1

Given that sum of these numbers = 43

==> x + 2x + 1 = 43

==> 3x + 1 = 43

==> 3x = 42

==> x = 42%2F3

==> x = 14
There fore, y = 2x + 1 = 2*14 + 1 = 28 + 1 = 29

So, first number = 14 and

second number = 29

Hope you found the explanation useful.

The answer you have got is not correct. Their sum is 43 but second number is not one more than two times the first.
Hope you found the mistake you have committed.
