Question 938556: I have an 82.79 percent in my class
My final is worth 21%
he still needs to add 5% for participation points ( i know i will get full points), 6% for a presentation (i know i got 5% he just hasnt post it) and he needs to drop my lowest exam that is worth 4.16 percent
is it possible to get a 90%?
please help me!

When my youngest son was in high school, I did a lot of these calculations.
It is important to know full details about how averages have been and will be calculated.
I can reasonably assume that the 82.79 is a weighted average of all grades included so far,
but the participation points, and presentation points are not included in that calculation.
Since the final is not included yet,
the current 82.79 average represents the average of the 100%-21%-5%-6%=68% of all possible grades.
That means that the 82.79 is equivalent to 82.79(68%)=56.3%.
To that you would add the 5% already earned for participation,
the 5% already earned for the presentation,
and up to 21% for a perfect score (hoped for) in the final.
The sum is 56.3%+5%+5%+21%=87.3% .
With the assumptions above, and using that 82.79% current average (no exam dropped), that would be your final grade.
Now, what is the effect of dropping the 4.16% in the lowest exam?
It depends on how that 4.16% is calculated, and how the 82.79% was calculated.
If each exam was worth 10% of the total grade, and 4.16% means that you got 10 out of 24 questions right in your lowest scoring exam, dropping that exam will help your final grade.
If the 4.16% is 1/24, meaning that you only had 1 right answer in an exam with 24 questions, dropping that will help your final grade even more.
The question is how much would it help, and that depends on what that 4.16% means (how it was calculated),
and how much did it weigh into the 82.79% current average.
If there were no other grades except exams, participation, and presentation,
and the bad grade was 4.16% of right answers, and it counted for a lot of what went into the 82.79% current average,
dropping that 4.16% would be a big deal.
Say that your current grade was the average of 6 equally weighted exams graded as 97, 98, 99, 99, 99, and 4.16%.
The average that you get for the 6 exams is

If the 82.79% is the average of many exams, quizzes, and homework assignments, the grade for one exam would not weigh too much into that average,
