You can put this solution on YOUR website!
a man can row 15 km downstream in 1 hour and upstream for the same distance in 3 hours.Using the same speed, how far can the man row in 3 hours in still water?
let x=speed of rowboat in still water
let c=speed of current
x+c=speed of rowboat downstream
x-c=speed of rowboat upstream
travel time*speed=distance
..
3(x-c)=15
1(x+c)=15
..
3x-3c=15
x+c=15
..
3x-3c=15
3x+3c=45 (mult. eq. by 3)
add
6x=60
x=10 km/h=speed of rowboat in still water
how far can the man row in 3 hours in still water? 30 km

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Going upstream, his speed is +15+ km/hr
Going downstream, his speed is +15%2F3+=+5+ km/hr
Let +s+ = his speed rowing in still water
Let +c+ = the speed of the current
+s+-+c+ = his speed rowing upstream
+s+%2B+c+ = his speed rowing downstream
---------------------------------------
I can say:
+%28+s+%2B+c+%29+-+%28+s+-+c+%29+=+15+-+5+
+s+%2B+c+-+s+%2B+c+=+10+
+2c+=+10+
+c+=+5+ km/hr
-----------------
Plug this back in:
+s+%2B+c+=+15+
+s+%2B+5+=+15+
+s+=+10+ km/hr
-------------------
In still water:
+d+=+10%2A3+
+d+=+30+
He can row 30 km in 3 hrs in still water
-------------------
check:
+s+-+c+=+5+
+10+-+5+=+5+
+5+=+5+
OK
