More likely what you start with is this: (5-x)^(1/2)=x+1
Rendered to look like %285-x%29%5E%281%2F2%29=x%2B1.
When deciding on the finished answer, you must use the restriction
x%3C5 necessary. Square root must be nonzero for Real numbers.

First step is raise both sides to power 2.
5-x=x%5E2%2B2x%2B1
x%5E2%2B2x%2Bx%2B1-5=0
x%5E2%2B3x-4=0
%28x-1%29%28x%2B4%29=0


Solutions are highlight%28x=1%29 or highlight%28x=-4%29
Both of those will work.
