in a certain college,the ratio of mathematics major to English majors is 3:8.if in the following school year the number of mathematics majors increases 20% and the number of English majors decreases 15%.what is the new ratio of mathematics is majors to English majors?

the ratio of mathematics major to English majors is 3:8

..

Let x represent the constant of proportionality

3x(1.20) = 3.6x   Mathematics majors increases 20% 

8x(.85) = 6.8x    English majors decreases 15%

3.6/6.8 = 36/68  0r 9/17, the new ratio of mathematics is majors to English majors
