Question 93658: Sorry this is not from a book.
Tickets for a play at the community theater cost $14 for and adult and $2 for a child. If 270 tickets were sold and the total receipts were $2340, how many of each type of ticket were sold?
I do not think I am setting the right equation. x + y + 270 = 2340 I am sure I am off because it does not look right. Any help in the right direction would be wonderful. Thanks....

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Tickets for a play at the community theater cost $14 for and adult and $2 for a child. If 270 tickets were sold and the total receipts were $2340, how many of each type of ticket were sold?
----------------
In problems of this type you need to keep quantity and value separate.
-------------
Let # of adult tickets be "x" ; Value of these is 14x dollars
---------
# of child tickets is "270-x" ; value of these is 2(270-x) = 540-2x dollars
-------------------
EQUATION:
value + value = $2340
14x + 540-2x = 2340
12x = 1800
x = 150 (# of adult tickets sold)
270-x = 120 ( # of child tickets sold)
