Then time taken to travel from LA to Chicago = D%2F440

Time taken on return trip (Chicago to LA) = D%2F360

Total time taken on round trip: D%2F440+%2B+D%2F360, or %289D+%2B+11D%29%2F3960, or 20D%2F3960, or D%2F198

Total distance: D + D, or 2D

Total distance divided by total time equals average speed. This translates to:
