a jet flies from los angeles to chicago at an average speed of 440 miles per hour. if it returns to los angeles along the same route at an average speed of 360 miles per hour, what is its average speed for the entire trip
Let distance from LA to Chicago, and vice-versa, be D
Then time taken to travel from LA to Chicago = D%2F440
Time taken on return trip (Chicago to LA) = D%2F360
Total time taken on round trip: D%2F440+%2B+D%2F360, or %289D+%2B+11D%29%2F3960, or 20D%2F3960, or D%2F198
Total distance: D + D, or 2D
Total distance divided by total time equals average speed. This translates to:
2D%2F%28D%2F198%29_____2D+%2A+%28198%2FD%29______highlight_green%28396%29 mph
You can do the check!!
