Question 934765: Can Anyone Please Help Me! I looked in my textbook and they give a complex explanation on how to solve this problem but I just can't wrap my brain around the concept!!!
Suppose a player hits a ball from point A at an angle of 45° on a pool table that measures 9’ by 4.5’ as shown.

How many times will the ball hit a side of the table before going into a pocket? If a player hits the ball at the same angle but the table measures 9’ by 6’, how many times will it hit a side? (HINT: Try making a scale drawing.)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
on a 9’ by 4.5’ table, the ball will go directly into the side pocket without hitting any rails.
---
why:
the upper-left triangle, including point A and the top-center pocket, is isoceles.
---
on a 9’ by 6’ table, the ball will go into the top-left corner pocket after hitting 3 rails.
---
why:
the ball will hit the top rail 3 feet from the right side, the ball will then bounce at 45 degrees and hit the right rail in the middle (3 feet from top and 3 feet from bottom), the ball will then bounce at 45 degrees and hit the bottom rail 6 feet from the left side, the ball will then bounce at 45 degrees and enter the top-left pocket.

Suppose a player hits a ball from point A at an angle of 45° on a pool table that measures 9’ by 4.5’ as shown.
------
Since the angle with the left side is 45 degrees
the angle of incidence at the longer side will be 45 degrees.
So the path of the ball is the hypotenuse of an isosceles
right triangle.
Since the left side is 4.5' the ball will hit a spot 4.5'
along the longer side. That is where the pocket is.
The ball will go into the pocket.
How many times will the ball hit a side of the table before going into a pocket?
Ans:: 0 or 1 depending on how you read "hit the side".
------------------------------
If a player hits the ball at the same angle but the table measures 9’ by 6’, how many times will it hit a side? (HINT: Try making a scale drawing.)
-----
1st hit will miss the pocket by 6".
Draw the other side of the right isosceles triangle which is 4.5' long
Determine the hypotenuse whichis 4.5*sqrt(2) long on the longer side.
Keep drawing these right triangles till you find one of the sides that
intersects the side pocket.

Stan H.
