Question 934664: Dear sir/madam,
Thank you very much for taking the time to help me.
This is my problem:
The sum of the present ages of Ian and his brother is 45. In 5 years, Ian’s age will be five-sixths of his brother’s age. Find their present ages.
And this is my attempt:
Let: i = Ian's current age
b = Ian's brother's current age
Therefore, the equation for their current ages is:
i + b = 45
And in 5 years time:
(5/6)b + 5 + b + 5 = 45 + 5
(5/6)b + (6/6)b + 10 = 6(50)
5b + 6b + 10 = 300
11b +10 = 300
11b +10 - 10 = 300 - 10
11b = 290
11b/11 = 290/11
b = 26.36
Working this answer back into the original equation I get 58.32 which does not equal 50 (i.e. 45 + 5)
Thank you kindly for you help.
Kindest regards,

You can put this solution on YOUR website! The sum of the present ages of Ian and his brother is 45. In 5 years, Ian’s age will be five-sixths of his brother’s age. Find their present ages.
I+b=45
I=45-b
after 5 years Ian's age = I+5
brothers age = b+5
condition
(I+5) = (5/6)(b+5)
6(I+5)=5(b+5)
6I+30 =5b+25
6I-5b=-5
substitute I
6(b-5) -5b=-5
6b-30-5b=-5
b=30-5
b=25
