Let x= number of hens required to lay 24 eggs in 3 day
then x hens lays eggs at the rate of 24/3=8 eggs per day
9 hens lays at the rate of 6/2 =3 eggs per day
1 hen lays at the rate of 2/9=1/3 egg per day
From here, we can go two ways:
(1) set up a ratio:
x/8=9/3
3x=72
x=24---number of hens needed
(2) Another way:
1/3 egg/day(x)hens=8 eggs/day, or
(1/3)x=8
x=24---hens needed

Here is another way
If nine hens can lay six eggs in two days,
find how many hen days per egg
9 * 2 = 6
18 Hen-days = 6 eggs
18/6 = 3 hen-days per egg
