Question 930994: A cross section of a standard or nominal board measures
11 1/2 in by 7 1/2 in. The rough board is 12in by 8in but is planed and dried to the finished size. What percent of the wood is removed in planing and drying?

You can put this solution on YOUR website! 11 1/2 = 11.5
7 1/2 = 7.5
-------------------------------------------------------
Old Area: 12 * 8 = 96 square inches
New Area: 11.5*7.5 = 86.25 square inches
-------------------------------------------------------
Percent Change = [(New - Old)/(Old)]*100
Percent Change = [(86.25- 96)/(86.25)]*100
Percent Change = (-0.11304)*100
Percent Change = -11.304 %
The percent change is negative to represent a percentage decrease.
So roughly 11.304% of the wood is removed.
