multiplying the right side of the equation of a graph by "a":

stretches the graph vertically by a factor of a if a > 1 and shrinks it
vertically by a factor of a if a < 1.

To think of stretching a graph, think of the graph drawn on a rubber sheet
and the rubber sheet stretched.  Think of how that would change the looks
of the graph.

To think of stretching a graph, think of the graph drawn on the side of a block
of foam rubberand the block of foam rubber pressed downward.  Think of how that
would change the looks of the graph.
