Question 930224: Mr Edwards is now 3 times as old as his daughter.in 15 years time the sum of their age as will be 86
A)find their ages now
B)How old was Mr Edwards when his daughter was born
Answer by algebrahouse.com(1659) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! x = daughter's age now
3x = Mr. Edwards' age now {he is 3 times his daughter}
x + 15 = daughter in 15 years {added 15 onto daughter's current age}
3x + 15 = Mr. Edwards in 15 years {added 15 onto Mr. Edwards' current age}
x + 15 + 3x + 15 = 86 {sum of their ages, in 15 years, will be 86}
4x + 30 = 86 {combined like terms}
4x = 56 {subtracted 30 from each side}
x = 14 {divided each side by 4}
3x = 42 {substituted 14, in for x, into 3x}
His daughter is 14 and Mr. Edwards is 42, and
Mr. Edwards was 28 when his daughter was born {subtracted 14 from 42}
